What Porzana Is

Porzana is a modern Argentine steakhouse in Minneapolis’ North Loop, taking over the former Bachelor Farmer space, which closed during COVID. The restaurant has been completely reimagined into a large, open, warehouse-style dining room with a massive bar and full views into the kitchen.

Led by Chef Daniel del Prado, Porzana blends wood-fired Argentine steakhouse cooking with strong Italian influence. If you have traveled to Argentina, this makes perfect sense. The country’s deep Italian roots show up everywhere, from pasta to wine culture, and Porzana leans into that beautifully.

For my wife Melissa and me, Porzana has become our anniversary dinner spot. We actually got married upstairs back when this space was the Bachelor Farmer, and that same upstairs area is still used today for private events and weddings. We first came shortly after Porzana opened, and it has become a meaningful place for us to come back to each year.

My Experience

The visit: I have been here twice now, and both experiences have been excellent. On our first visit, we sat with a direct view into the kitchen and watched Chef Daniel del Prado expediting dishes all night. It is one of those places where the energy is part of the experience. We even spotted PJ Fleck and Chef Gavin Kaysen dining nearby.

The drinks: The wine list is strong, especially for pairing with steak, but I also like keeping it simple here with a Quilmes, a classic Argentine lager. On our most recent visit, we brought our own bottle of wine and had it uncorked, which worked out great.

The starters: The empanadas are a must. Fresh, flavorful, and paired with a spicy green llajua sauce that adds a nice kick. This is an easy first order to start the meal.

The Steaks & Pasta

The wood-fired steaks are the centerpiece here. We ordered the Entraña skirt steak, which had incredible flavor, a great char, and was cooked perfectly. You have to order the chimichurri. It is bright, fresh, and exactly what you want with Argentine-style steak.

They also offer a range of sauces, including a rich Gorgonzola Mornay, which adds a completely different layer to the dish.

Where Porzana really stands out is how strong the pasta program is for a steakhouse. The Sweet Corn Agnolotto, served in a chicken jus with hazelnuts and truffle, is one of the more unique and memorable dishes on the menu.

For sides, the glazed carrots with whipped ricotta and puffed rice were excellent, with just the right amount of char and texture.

The Steak

The steaks at Murray’s are consistently excellent. They are well seasoned, deeply flavorful, and cooked exactly the way you request.

One thing worth noting is that if you order medium rare, it will often arrive leaning toward the rare side with a deep red center. Many steak lovers prefer it that way, but it is something to keep in mind if you like your steak a little more cooked.

Over the years we have ordered several steaks here including the famous Butter Knife Steak for Two, the sirloin, and most recently the Chateaubriand. Every visit has been consistently great.

A Hidden Upstairs Pizzeria in the Golden Zone

La Sagrada Pizzeria is a small upstairs wood fired pizza restaurant in Mazatlán’s Golden Zone, tucked near the Pueblo Bonito resort. It is easy to miss if you do not already know it is there, but once you walk in, the warm lighting, wine shelves, and compact dining room make it feel like a proper neighborhood date-night spot.

Mazatlán is obviously loaded with excellent tacos, ceviche, aguachile, and grilled seafood, which is a huge part of why I love being here. But when you are staying for a month, a city really stands out when it gives you variety too. La Sagrada is one of those places that reminds you Mazatlán can do a lot more than just great Mexican food.

My Experience

The visit: My wife and I had dinner here last night and walked in without a reservation. We got lucky and were seated, but because the restaurant is small, I would recommend booking ahead for dinner.

Drinks: La Sagrada has a nice wine selection that gives the meal more of a polished dinner feel than a casual pizza stop. We had an Italian blend by the glass, served properly chilled, and it paired really well with the pizzas.

The food: We started with the broccolini, then shared two pizzas, and every part of the meal hit.

  • Broccolini: A great starter with plenty of flavor and a nice balance of greens, herbs, and texture. It was lighter than going straight into pizza and made a good first dish for the table.
  • Margherita pizza: This was simple in the best way. Bright tomato sauce, fresh basil, bubbling cheese, and a beautifully blistered crust that tasted like true wood fired pizza.

My Experience

The visit: We came for a Saturday night dinner and the restaurant had a lively weekend energy. Service throughout the evening was polished and attentive without feeling overly formal.

The Best Seafood in Mazatlán’s Golden Zone

Los Arcos is an upscale seafood restaurant located in the Golden Zone, one of Mazatlán’s most popular dining areas. It is known for exceptionally fresh fish and beautifully prepared coastal Mexican dishes, with many ingredients likely coming off the boat earlier that same day.

The dining room feels polished but still relaxed, making it a great place for a long lunch or a seafood focused dinner.

One of the most interesting touches here is that the staff occasionally rolls out a cart of fresh seafood so guests can actually see the fish available that day. It is a reminder that Mazatlán is still very much a working fishing city.

My Experience

The visit: I came here for lunch with my sister and we decided to lean fully into the seafood. Coming from Minnesota, I thought I understood fresh fish, but eating here completely reset that standard.

The food: We ordered three tostadas to start: shrimp, scallops, and sea bass. Each one was incredibly bright and fresh with clean citrus flavors and perfectly balanced toppings.

  • Shrimp Tostada: Loaded with tender shrimp, tomato, onion, cilantro, and avocado. Light, refreshing, and full of ocean flavor.
  • Sea Bass Ceviche Tostada: Beautifully clean tasting fish with fresh tomato and herbs that let the quality of the seafood shine.

Khue’s Kitchen is a small Vietnamese restaurant tucked into an industrial pocket near Highway 94 and 280 in St. Paul, just a few blocks off University Avenue. It is the kind of place that might be easy to miss if you did not know it was there, but once you step inside it immediately feels welcoming and lively.

The restaurant focuses on fresh Vietnamese flavors with a menu that mixes classics with a few creative dishes. The space itself is surprisingly spacious and comfortable for the location, making it a great neighborhood spot for a relaxed dinner.

My Experience

The visit: My wife and I made a 7 PM reservation and were seated immediately. Service was friendly and incredibly efficient. Our entire dinner took about 40 minutes, which ended up being perfect since a big winter storm was moving in that night.

Drinks: Khue’s Kitchen does not have a full liquor license, but they offer a well curated selection of local beer and cider. I had an Indeed Flavorwave IPA and my wife ordered a Keepsake cider.

The food: We ordered three dishes to share, which ended up being more than enough for two people.

  • Crispy Pork Lettuce Wraps: A Friday and Saturday special featuring pork belly with excellent crispy skin and a bright fish sauce vinaigrette. The butter lettuce leaves were a little small for wrapping, so we ended up using a fork and knife, but the flavors were excellent.
  • Chili Crunch Wings: These came out piping hot with a thick, crunchy coating that almost eats like great fried chicken. The chili crunch adds a little heat and texture without overpowering the dish.
  • Bún Chay (Rice Noodle Salad): This ended up being the standout dish of the meal. The crispy tofu was remarkably light and crunchy, and the mix of fresh herbs and noodles immediately brought back memories of eating in Vietnam.

The balance of texture and freshness across the dishes made the meal feel thoughtful and well executed rather than just casual takeout style Vietnamese food.

Bourbon Steak by Michael Mina is an excellent choice for a special night out in downtown Nashville, combining elevated steakhouse dining with some of the best city views in town. Located on the 34th floor of the JW Marriott, the restaurant offers sweeping views of the Nashville skyline.

A helpful tip is to request a city-view table when booking, as it truly elevates the experience. An express elevator takes you straight up to the restaurant, adding to the sense of occasion.

Service was outstanding from the moment we arrived. The meal began with a complimentary amuse-bouche of French fries seasoned three different ways and paired with three dipping sauces, a fun and flavorful start that set the tone for the evening.

Bourbon Steak kicks things off with a complimentary trio of perfectly seasoned fries and sauces. Consider it a warm-up lap before the steaks arrive.

What We Ordered

The menu leans heavily into premium beef selections, more so than a typical steakhouse. Options include wood-fired Black Angus steaks, American Wagyu, and Japanese Wagyu.

To start, we ordered the gulf shrimp cocktail, which featured cold shredded horseradish that added a bold kick and paired nicely with the house gin-spiked cocktail sauce.

For our main course, we shared two steaks from the Black Angus selection: the Delmonico ribeye and the fifty-five-day dry-aged bone-in ribeye. Comparing the two was part of the fun.

The dry-aged ribeye was slightly more tender and complex in flavor, but both steaks were excellent. Each was nicely seared, well seasoned, and cooked medium-rare exactly as ordered.

We ordered two sides to accompany the steaks: crispy brussels sprouts, honey & lime, and pork belly fried rice. Both were well prepared, but the brussels sprouts stood out with their balance of sweetness and acidity. If choosing just one, the sprouts would be the top pick.

After our morning at the Guinness Storehouse, we walked about twelve minutes down the road to The Brazen Head, widely recognized as Ireland’s oldest pub. It turned out to be the perfect next stop after a pint-heavy morning.

Dating back to 1198, The Brazen Head is packed with character. Stone walls, low wooden beams, and tight, cozy corners give the space a real sense of history. It feels lived-in and atmospheric rather than polished or staged.


What We Ordered

We ordered the Irish stew and the fish and chips, both solid examples of classic Dublin pub fare.

The Irish stew was the clear standout. Hearty, comforting, and deeply flavorful, it came with creamy mash that worked perfectly with the rich gravy. It is exactly the kind of dish you want after a pint or two of Guinness.

The fish and chips were not the best we have ever had, but still enjoyable and well executed. Crispy batter, flaky fish, and generous portions made it a reliable choice.
